GRADUATION PHOTOGRAPHY GUIDE: HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR GRADUATION SHOOT
By Elizabeth Wood Photography | Graduation Photographer Leeds & Sheffield
Graduation day is one of those days that goes by faster than you expect. You've spent years working toward it, and suddenly it's here - the gown, the hat, the photos with everyone, the ceremony, the celebrations. It's a lot.
The official university photos are great, but they're not the whole story. A dedicated graduation photography session gives you something more personal - images that actually look like you, taken at a pace that lets you relax and enjoy it.
Here's everything you need to know to make the most of yours.
WHEN SHOULD YOU BOOK?
As early as possible - and ideally before your ceremony date.
Graduation season runs from June through to November for most Yorkshire universities, and the most popular dates fill up quickly. Booking in advance means you get the date and time that works best for you, rather than whatever's left.
If you've left it late, don't panic. I keep a small number of slots available for last-minute bookings - get in touch and I'll do my best to make it work.
BEFORE OR AFTER THE CEREMONY?
This is probably the most common question I get, and the honest answer is: it depends.
Before the ceremony - You're fresh, your gown is pristine, and you haven't been hugging everyone for three hours. The downside is you might be nervous, and time is tight.
After the ceremony - You're elated, relaxed, and the day has already started well. The gown might have a few creases, but the energy in your photos will be worth it.
Many graduates choose to do a short session after the ceremony. If you're unsure, we can chat through what works best for your schedule.
WHAT TO WEAR (UNDER THE GOWN)
You'll be wearing your gown and mortarboard for most of your graduation photos - but what you wear underneath matters more than you might think, especially if you want some shots without the gown too.
Keep it simple. Dark colours work best under a graduation gown - navy, black, and deep jewel tones photograph beautifully.
Think about formality. Dress to the level you want to remember yourself at. This is one of the biggest days of your academic life - it's worth putting a little thought into.
Comfortable shoes matter. You'll be on your feet all day. Wear something you can actually walk in.
Hair and make-up. Do whatever makes you feel like yourself. The goal is for you to look back at these photos in ten years and recognise the person in them.
CHOOSING YOUR LOCATION
The best graduation photos happen in locations that feel relevant - your university campus, the surrounding streets, or a location that means something to you.
For Leeds graduates: I regularly photograph around the University of Leeds campus, Leeds Beckett, and the surrounding Headingley and city centre areas. The First Direct Arena is also a popular location for pre and post-ceremony shots for Leeds Beckett graduands.
For Sheffield graduates: Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield both have beautiful campus areas and surrounding streets. The Botanical Gardens and Kelham Island are also popular choices for something a bit different.
I know these locations well and can suggest the best spots based on the time of day and what you're looking for.
HOW LONG DOES A GRADUATION SESSION TAKE?
Most sessions run between 30 minutes and one hour - which is plenty of time to get a wide variety of images without it feeling like a long, exhausting shoot.
I work quickly and keep things relaxed. You'll never be standing around wondering what to do - I'll direct you throughout so you can just enjoy the experience.
WHAT ABOUT GROUP SHOTS?
Absolutely - family and group shots are a big part of graduation day. Let me know in advance if you want to include parents, siblings, or friends, and I'll plan the session to include everyone.
A few things to think about for group shots:
- Let your family know roughly when and where the session is happening so everyone's ready
- Have a plan for who you want in which shots before we start - it keeps things moving
- Keep groups to a manageable size - smaller groups photograph more naturally than large crowds
GETTING YOUR IMAGES BACK
Your edited graduation photos will be delivered via an online gallery within 7 days of your session, ready to download in high resolution. You'll be able to share, print, and post them straight away.
Sessions start from £90, and I cover Leeds, Sheffield, Rotherham, and the wider Yorkshire area.
ONE LAST THING
Graduation is one of those days that can feel overwhelming. There's a lot happening, a lot of people to see, and a lot to hold onto.
A dedicated photography session - even a short one - gives you something to come back to when the day is over. Not a memory of standing in a queue for the official photo, but a real, relaxed portrait of you at one of the best moments of your life.
Book yours before the season fills up.
THE BEST OUTDOOR LOCATIONS FOR PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS IN LEEDS AND SHEFFIELD
By Elizabeth Wood Photography | Headshot Photographer Leeds & Sheffield
One of the most common questions I get asked before a headshot session is: where should we shoot?
The location matters more than most people realise. The right backdrop can make your headshots look polished and professional. The wrong one can look cluttered, distracting, or just a bit… random.
The good news is that Leeds and Sheffield are full of brilliant spots for outdoor headshots - you just need to know where to look. Here are my favourites, plus what makes each one work.
LEEDS
1. Leeds City Centre - The Calls & Riverside
The area around The Calls and the riverside offers beautiful brick textures, interesting archways, and a mix of urban and more relaxed backdrops. It photographs brilliantly in both bright sun and overcast light, and it's easy to get to for anyone working in the city centre.
Best for: Creative professionals, business owners, anyone wanting an urban but not overly corporate feel.
2. Roundhay Park
One of the largest urban parks in Europe, Roundhay gives you access to sweeping green backdrops, tree-lined pathways, and natural light that's hard to beat. The variety of settings within the park means you can get multiple looks in a single session.
Best for: Coaches, consultants, and professionals who want a warmer, more approachable feel to their images.
3. Leeds Dock & Clarence Dock
The modern architecture and waterside setting here creates a clean, contemporary backdrop that works especially well for professionals in finance, tech, and corporate sectors. The reflections and open sky make for striking images.
Best for: Corporate professionals, lawyers, financial advisors, tech sector.
4. Kirkgate Market Area & Victoria Quarter
The Victorian arcades and surrounding streets offer stunning architectural detail - all gold and glass and ornate ironwork. It's a distinctive backdrop that gives headshots a real sense of place without being distracting.
Best for: Anyone who wants something a little different, creative industries, boutique business owners.
SHEFFIELD
5. Sheffield City Centre - Leopold Square & Surrounds
Leopold Square and the surrounding streets offer a mix of Georgian architecture and contemporary spaces that work brilliantly as a backdrop. Clean lines, good natural light, and easy to access from anywhere in the city.
Best for: Professionals, corporate teams, anyone wanting a classic professional look.
6. Sheffield Botanical Gardens
The gardens offer beautiful greenery, Victorian glasshouses, and a variety of backdrops all within a short walk of each other. Light filtering through the trees creates a naturally flattering, soft effect that's difficult to replicate in a studio.
Best for: Wellness professionals, coaches, creatives, and anyone wanting a relaxed, natural feel.
7. Kelham Island
The industrial heritage of Kelham Island - exposed brick, metal, cobbles, and converted warehouse spaces - makes for striking, characterful headshots that stand out from the usual corporate fare. It's become one of Sheffield's most photographed areas for good reason.
Best for: Creative businesses, entrepreneurs, tech and digital sector, anyone wanting something with personality.
8. Peace Gardens & Town Hall
The grand civic architecture around the Peace Gardens provides a formal, impressive backdrop that communicates authority and professionalism. Open sky and a wide plaza mean good natural light even on duller days.
Best for: Legal, financial, and corporate professionals wanting a more formal look.
How to Choose the Right Location
The best location for your headshots depends on three things:
Your industry. A barrister and a brand designer probably want different backdrops. Think about what your clients expect and what communicates your expertise.
How you want to come across. Formal and authoritative? Creative and approachable? Warm and friendly? The setting reinforces the message your images send.
Practical considerations. Think about time of day (early morning and late afternoon give the best natural light), weather (overcast days are often better than harsh sunshine), and how far you need to travel.
If you're not sure, I'll help you decide during our pre-session conversation. I know these locations well and can recommend what will work best for what you're trying to achieve.
What About Indoor Sessions?
Not everyone wants outdoor headshots - and that's completely fine. I also offer studio-style headshots using professional lighting, and I can come to your office for on-location corporate sessions across Leeds, Sheffield, and Yorkshire.

Sessions start from £150 and are available across Leeds, Sheffield, Rotherham, and the wider Yorkshire area. I offer flexible scheduling to fit around your working day.

Everything You Need to Know Before You Book a Wedding Photographer
From choosing the right style to finding the perfect Yorkshire venue - our guides help you make the best decisions for your wedding day.

Beautiful Wedding Venues in Yorkshire - And What to Look for in a Photographer When You Book One
By Elizabeth Wood Photography | Wedding Photographer Leeds & Sheffield
Yorkshire is one of the best counties in England to get married in. From grand country houses to intimate civic ceremonies, converted barns to boutique hotels - the variety is extraordinary, and the backdrops for wedding photography are genuinely some of the best in the country.
Having photographed weddings across Leeds, Sheffield, Rotherham and the wider Yorkshire region, I've had the privilege of working in some truly special venues. Here's a look at some of my favourites - and the one question couples should always ask their photographer before they book.

Hellaby Hall, Wickersley
Set in the heart of Rotherham, Hellaby Hall is a stunning 17th-century country house hotel that gives you everything you want from a Yorkshire wedding venue - grand interiors, beautiful grounds, and that sense of occasion that makes a wedding feel like a wedding.
For photography, the venue offers a fantastic mix of formal and relaxed settings. The exterior stonework and manicured grounds make for classic, timeless portraits, while the interiors give you rich, warm light that works beautifully in the quieter moments between the ceremony and reception.
Best for: Couples who want a classic, elegant wedding with plenty of variety for their photographer to work with.

The Woodlands Hotel, Leeds
The Woodlands Hotel in Leeds is a popular choice for couples wanting a well-organised, full-service venue with easy access from across the city. The grounds offer a lovely natural backdrop, particularly in spring and summer when the surrounding greenery is at its best.
Photographically, the venue rewards photographers who work quickly and read the light well - the outdoor spaces shift throughout the day and getting the most from them means knowing exactly when to be where.
Best for: Couples wanting a reliable, well-equipped venue with good outdoor photography opportunities close to Leeds city centre.

Spicer Manor, Penistone
Tucked away in the hills above Penistone, Spicer Manor is a beautiful, intimate venue with genuine character. It's the kind of place that suits couples who want something a little different - away from the standard hotel wedding, with a real sense of personality and place.
The surrounding South Yorkshire countryside provides a dramatic natural backdrop that photographs brilliantly in all seasons, and the intimate scale of the venue means there's a relaxed, personal atmosphere throughout the day.
Best for: Couples who want something intimate and distinctive, with a strong sense of place in the South Yorkshire countryside.

Leeds Civic Hall
For couples who want something genuinely different, Leeds Civic Hall is one of the most striking ceremony venues in the city. The grand architecture - all Portland stone and golden owls - creates a dramatic backdrop that's unlike anywhere else in Yorkshire.
Winter weddings here are particularly special. The combination of the formal architecture and seasonal light creates images with real atmosphere and drama that you simply can't replicate anywhere else.
Best for: Couples wanting a distinctive, architecturally striking ceremony venue with real character.

The One Question to Ask Your Photographer Before You Book
Every venue is different - and a great wedding photographer should know how to work in all of them.
Before you confirm your photographer, ask them this:
"Have you worked at our venue before, and if not, how do you prepare for a new venue?"
A good answer will include visiting the venue beforehand, researching the space and light conditions, and having a conversation with your venue coordinator about the schedule and access. A less experienced photographer might not have considered any of this.
I visit every new venue before the wedding day where possible, and I always have a detailed conversation with couples about their schedule, priorities, and the moments that matter most to them. No two weddings are the same - and your photography should reflect that.

Ready to Talk About Your Wedding?
I photograph weddings across Leeds, Sheffield, Rotherham and throughout Yorkshire, with packages starting from £495 for intimate ceremonies and elopements.
I only take a limited number of weddings each year to make sure every couple gets the time and attention they deserve - so if you're planning ahead, it's worth getting in touch sooner rather than later.
